Morpheus, if it's a long term thing, best see a physio. The IT band is long, so could be related/affected by something else.

Otherwise, the usual foam rolling, sports massages and stretching can help.

Anyone have tips for treating an iliotibial band injury? Its very intermittent; sometimes feels completely normal, sometimes cannot get out of a chair......really irritating

Re: WHO Runners, Shoe advice
SI,

If you enjoy it then I expect the main purpose is to stay fit so you can carry on as you like.
In this case I would slow down as if you go out full on every time, the fatigue will catch up with you and you will either burn out or get injured.

This is the most common form of injury in running that I have seen and as a running coach the first thing I often need to do is slow an athlete down!

Not only does it improve your performance (making you more fresh for the times you want/need to go harder and also improving your aerobic capacity which helps you carry speed more efficiently) it actually becomes quite liberating when you forget about pace and just enjoy your surroundings and remove any pressure of having to maintain a certain pace.

As an example, my 5k PB pace from lockdown last year was just under 5:30m/m but at the time I was still running most of my runs at around 7:30-8:30m/m. The only time I would run harder was my once a week speed session, in rotation on my longs runs I would add some efforts in, and a small injection of speed into another run once a week. So 4 out of 7 runs were easy.

I enjoy my running more than ever and it also makes me faster than if I was gong all out every time!

Asics Gel Cumulus had been my go to for a while before my wife started buying cheap ones at discount stores. I finally went back to the cumulus and while I like them, I ran into the same issue you did with them wearing out pretty quickly. They used to be pretty durable, but seems to be the case with everything these days, cheaper material and workmanship and higher prices.

Re: WHO Runners, Shoe advice
scott, thanks for that...

I run nearly everyday, usually around 6K, some days I may go up to 10K but very rarely more than that, and im pretty much full on the whole run, no easy runs for me! Maybe hence not doing big distances, although that’s maybe something I should be doing! And will start doing a few 15-20K but at far easier pace

I run as I enjoy it, not training for anything, not a member of any club or do any races, purely me and usually the dog in tow, air pods and off in my own world, find it very relaxing, well mentally anyway!.

Ordered the Clifton’s last night, will rotate with the Nimbus 23 as long as I can and then get another pair to rotate with them, maybe the Pegasus 38 or NB 1080, both shoes I have heard good things about.

Don’t normally rotate the running shoes as I go to Gym between runs so have separate shoes for gym work, but with those all closed again due to the virus im back to running only so makes sense to rotate, maybe didn’t help the Nimbus 23 that it was used everyday, foams never got a chance to recover and spring back.

I have used Mizuno Waveriders for years. Very good shoes. They have a high heel drop (12mm) which helps if you suffer from lower leg issues.

Re: WHO Runners, Shoe advice
Sydney, it honestly depends on how much you are running, what you're training for (if anything), what type of terrain you are running on etc etc.

Do you just run for fun, socially etc, 2-3 times a week, just to keep fit? With no focus on speed or distance etc. If so, just buy the ones that feel the most comfortable to you.

If you like soft shoes then look at Nike Invincible, Asics Novablast, New Balance 1080 to name a few.

If you run a little more than 2-3 times a week, incuding the odd speed/tempo session maybe a long run at the weekend then you should really consider rotating your shoes. This will help you prevent injury as well as making those specific sessions more effective with more specific shoes.

For instance, anything easy and slow (relative to whatever you consider fast) then the previous shoes mentioned would be ideal, and even for the long stuff if it's all done at an easy pace.

But when you start looking at the speed sessions, then you might want something a little lighter and more speed orgientated. Anything from an all-rounder like the Nike Pegasus right up to the Nike Vaporfly Next% of Nike Alphafly race shoes - something in between would be the Nike Zoom Fly or the Tempo Next% (and cheaper).

There are plenty of other training shoes that contain the carbon plate and some nice soft foam such as the New Balance Fuelcell TC which are decent.

Again it really depends on what what you do as all of the above is out of the window if you run everything on trail.

Vexed, if it's a potentially stupid question then here I am to help with more than often an even stupider answer.

They do a lot of different specialist boots, trainers.

Also got the cloudsurfer ones, perfect combination of comfort and support. Socks in those.

Its a bit of a contradiction in that a Boot Camp should be intensive training for a short period of time and I have been going for 10 years.

Just works for me, good intensity, outdoors whatever the weather. Have stuck at it longer than any gym.

They do many different shoes for many different uses.

I use the Cloudsurfer.

Potentially stupid question, those who have any of the On runners - do you wear socks with them? I gather they are a triathlon shoe and obviously wouldn't be worn with socks usually.

Re: WHO Runners, Shoe advice
I did return the first pair of Nimbus, they had done only 270klms according to Strava and the Garmin watch, they replaced them and the new pair are at 570 Kim’s so better but usually I would get closer to 800 plus from my shoes

Think it’s just a quality issue with that particular shoe, other than that they are very comfortable and good support.

Re: WHO Runners, Shoe advice
I would get in touch with Ascis- how many miles old are they… sound like a product issue

I have only run in Pegasus as I know they suit and don’t want to risk others. I tend to buy in the sales just after the newest incarnation comes out for half price.

I have bought Nike Pegasus and On Cloud Flyer in the last few months after previously wearing Asics for a number of years. All are good running shoes but the Nike just feel so much more comfortable and I run better as well. I street run by the way.

have you considered roller skates?

since moving to them i've beaten every one of my PBs.

Re: WHO Runners, Shoe advice
I've had Asics, Brooks and Saucony in the past all good. What I find with all of them is you get to like a model then they tinker with it for the next iteration and it doesnt work.

I got gifted some Hokas and they are the tits for the rare times I do distance but for every day 5 - 10k and boot camp I have a pair of odd coloured Sauconys that work. For Trails and Winter Boot Camp New Balance work perfectly for me.
